RAYNHAM — The Raynham Police Department arrested a Brockton man on multiple firearm charges after detectives located a loaded handgun near the site of a traffic stop and later observed the man return to the area and search where the gun had been found.
ANTHONY LUMA AUGUSTE, AGE 33, of BROCKTON, was arrested and charged with:
- Carrying a Loaded Firearm Without a License
- Unlicensed Possession of an Assault Weapon
- Possession of a Large-Capacity Firearm
- Possession of Ammunition
- Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
- Speeding
On Tuesday, Aug. 18, at about 2:15 p.m., Sgt. Joshua O’Brien was on patrol when he observed a black SUV traveling eastbound on King Philip Street at 47 mph in a 30-mph zone.
Sgt. O’Brien attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop of the black SUV, and briefly lost sight of the vehicle in the area of King Philip Street before successfully stopping the vehicle.
Sgt. O’Brien identified the driver as AUGUSTE and determined that his driver’s license was suspended. It was also determined that the vehicle was a rental and had been rented by another person.
Following the initial traffic stop, Detectives Patrick Leahy and Jared Turkington searched the area along King Philip Street and located a Glock 30 .45-caliber handgun on the ground approximately 700 feet from where the vehicle was stopped. The firearm contained a magazine loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition.
AUGUSTE, who was allowed to leave the initial traffic stop with another ride, later arrived at the Raynham Police Department to obtain paperwork needed to retrieve the rental vehicle from a tow yard.
Detectives believed AUGUSTE might return to the area where the firearm had been located and established surveillance nearby.
At approximately 4:45 p.m., detectives observed a vehicle carrying AUGUSTE return to King Philip Street. AUGUSTE exited the passenger side of the vehicle and spent several minutes searching the ground in the same area where detectives had recovered the handgun.
Detectives subsequently stopped the vehicle and arrested AUGUSTE.
AUGUSTE is expected to be arraigned Wednesday in Taunton District Court.
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
